Resident & breeding bird to the woodlands. Best heard drumming in early spring.

Usually 1 or 2 recorded throughout. Breeds.

1996 - As above.

02/02/97 - 3 birds seen in dispute with much calling & drumming

05/06/98 - 3 birds

10/01/99 - Single male drumming. A male was heard throughout the year

23/01/00 - Single male drumming

17/02/00 - 4 birds in company of a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

17/12/00 - 5 birds

17/11/01 - 3 birds

25/11/01 - One bird drumming

2002 - Seen throughout the year with up to 3 in December

24/05/03 - 3 pairs

2004 - 1 or 2 throughout the year

2005 - only one reported on 15/12, but probably under reported

2006 - Nested and young raised

2007 - Singles throughout the year. Drumming heard in December and 3 birds on 25/12

2008 - Often 1 or 2 with 3 on 25/12/08. Drumming heard in March and April

2009 - Often one heard calling. 2 drumming in February

2010 - 3 on 30/01, 2 Drumming in January, February and April

2011 - 1 or 2 through the year with drumming heard in May, November and December

2012 - 1 or 2 on 37 dates with drumming heard in January, February, March and December

2013 - Recorded on 40 dates, 3 drumming on 11/04

2014 - Recorded on 41 dates, 2 nests found with young in May and June

2015 - Recorded on 31 dates, 1 nest found

2016 - Recorded on 44 dates, 1 nest found in May. Max 5 on 12/03 with much drumming and calling. Seen on the full length of the reserve from the south car park to the north
