Fulvous Whistling Duck -  Although this is not a very brightly coloured duck, it is certainly exotic and stands out from the crowd, literally, with its long legs and long neck. Its natural habitat is South Africa, South America or Asia. This bird is reasonably tame and must be presumed to have escaped from a collection.

November 14th 2003

Very windy today. I was hopeful that something unusual would be blown in. The number of gulls increased during the day and that may be because the res is better sheltered than some places. Strangely, although the number of Common Gulls has been relatively high lately (5 at lunchtime today, more in recent days), there was only one left this evening when the Black Headed Gulls reached their peak. The Little Egrets are congregating in the evenings, but flying off before dark. There were 4 present even at lunchtime today. The Great Crested Grebe count was particularly good today when you consider the size of this reservoir. The Mute Swans were seen to leave early this morning, so that may be the last we see of these two.

The winter thrushes are arriving from Scandinavia. Redwing can be heard now especially at night and parties of Fieldfare have been seen in the area. Also there are more Blackbirds than usual, their numbers boosted by migrants from the north. Wigeon have arrived and the duck numbers have increased in the last few days giving a real autumn feel to the place.

Kestrels are not unusual, but are more often seen over the surrounding fields. The 3 Great Crested Grebe chicks are thriving but I have not yet seen evidence that a second now abandoned nest produced any young.
