2009 sightings
New for the reservoir in 2009 were: Great White Egret, Cattle Egret and Whooper Swan. There was a near miss too with Golden Plover in nearby fields. Also we had the 2nd record of Spotted Redshank, 3rd and 4th records of both Little Ringed Plover and Turnstone. Not forgetting that Red Throated Diver and Mandarin Duck recorded their 6th ever records as well to make a fantastic autumn. Added to that is Firecrest, the first for 10 years.

3rd Winter Great Black Backed Gull stood on ice. This is the only Great Black Backed record this year. |

Only a relatively small amount of the water was clear of ice today on the south east side and there was a mist over the ice, making counting the Teal very tricky. The north end where the Goosander were the other day was completely frozen over. The two Lesser Black Backed Gulls were darker than usual and may be north eastern races. |

A good number of Egrets now being reported just before dark each day. Only one was present at lunchtime. Water level quite high after heavy rain. |

Dave Helliar reports 2 adult and 3 immature Whooper Swans flying over and calling. They were later seen (by others) at Curry Moor and later still on Wet Moor. Another new species for the reservoir this year.

Another first for the Res and another Egret. If only the Great White had still been around. In Dave Helliar's own words: A Cattle Egret was perched in a dead tree in the SE corner this evening when I arrived at the hide at 18:00, but amazing timing....3 hot-air balloons flew over & spooked everything....the Egret flew northwards & climbed up over the trees on the north boundary....I thought it was gone, but it circled back & landed in the Scots Pines in the NE corner! Andy & I arrived at the dam end & had good views of the settled bird. It later flew to a dead tree by the reedbed at 18:50, when I left. Also... A whole bunch of what I believe to be Hornets were around the entrance to the wood today. |

Irregularly seen, Ravens are often flying over high, but this pair came down and landed in the trees of the woodland, only to be chased off by the local crows. Many of the Grebes are paired and displaying now. |

The res is 95% frozen - Just a small patch of open water in the middle containing the remaining grebes plus a little patch where the stream enters in the south west corner. Another very cold night predicted. I have never seen the res with no grebes, but tomorrow it could happen. |
