It's only when you look back through the records that you realise what
a good year it was for birds at Chard, especially passage birds.A Goldeneye on January 15th was most welcome
as was a record count of 33 Snipe on 25th, a Greylag
on 28thand a Goosander on 31st.
Mediterranean Gulls were good to see throughout the year from
February onwards. There was an amazing fall of 80+ Chiffchaffs
on March 23rd which for an inland site is so surprising. April, May and
June were fairly quiet. Waders were very well represented for a change
starting with a Redshank and 12 Common Sandpipers
in late July. Then August started with a Greenshank,
Black-tailed Godwit and the 3rd ever record of Wood
Sandpiper on 8th. 2 more Greenshank on 10th,
another Redshank on 13th, 15 Green Sandpipers
(record count) and another Greenshank on 15th. The 16th
brought 14 Green Sandpipers, a Black-tailed Godwit
, a Greenshank and 7 Common Sandpipers.
The 18th added another couple of Redshanks and then a
Ringed Plover turned up on 23rd. That would have been
enough waders for the month, but another Wood Sandpiper
turned up on 28th. On the 2nd September yet another Wood Sandpiper
was seen, the 6th brought a Knot (2nd record) and on
the 10th a Little Stint (3rd record). A Dunlin
on 12th would have finished this off nicely, but there was still one surprise
left with a Grey Phalarope (3rd record) on 18th. Crossbills
(4th record) were seen on 21st September, a Great White Egret
on 25th and just in case we thought the waders had finished,
there was a Little Ringed Plover on 29th that stayed
for nearly a week. Another Great White Egret on October
7th should have wrapped up the rarities for the year, but the very same
day a Yellow-browed Warbler
(1st record) was found by Roger Harris. A record count of 187 Canada
Geese, 4 Mediterranean Gulls and a Water
Rail were a noisy end to the month. November saw 10+ Mandarins,
a Mediterranean Gull and a Goosander.
December wasn't devoid of birds either with a Pochard
(not so common now), a couple of Mediterranean Gulls,
a Great White Egret and 2 Egyptian Geese (2nd
Record). A Mistle Thrush singing on 25th rounded off
the year nicely. There are other birds I haven't mentioned like Peregrine,
Raven and Common Tern, but this year

in sheltered positions it was the first day any real warmth was felt
from the sun. The Chiffs are reverting to a more normal behaviour
and flycatching from the trees. Only the south end was checked for

There appears to have been an increase in the pondweed (starwort),
presumably related to the high water levels recently. The Swans seemed
to be eating it and I know that Wigeon find it attractive, though
none here at the moment.
