Kevin Harris: The youngest grebes have grown in size, but are still
fluffy and grey.
BXN and CDS are a familiar pair of swans here. They were seen from
March into August this year. With 13 swans regularly present from
June to early August, BXN (the male) was being aggressive to the
other swans and managed to chase off all but 2 apart from his mate
CDS. But then his mate too disappeared. After 5 days without his
mate he decided to leave himself. This is the first time since then
that he has been identified and it's good to see that he has found
and paired up again with his mate.

Mute Swan FAX - This bird was ringed a few weeks ago at Nine Springs
Yeovil. At 08:00 today it was seen at Sutton Bingham then it was
at Chard Reservoir between 12:30 and 15:00 and was seen again later
at 17:00 at Chard Junction.

The immature Mute Swan is a new
bird, it is clearly much younger than the young birds seen previously
this year with an all black bill and being very brown in colour.
It has a yellow ring (the previous ones were unringed) but we have
not seen the code on the ring as yet.
The Blue Tits, Long-tailed Tits
and Chiffchaffs were moving around together in
the bushes to the east of the hide.
Although only 4 young Grebes are often being reported,
this is as seen from the hide. The other 2 young Grebes
have been seen recently at the north end out of sight of
the hide.

The dominant male swan BXN who has recently been
chasing other swans away has now left himself leaving 2 young unringed
swans behind. BXN was last seen on 17th Aug and his mate CDS was
last seen on 12th Aug. It appeared that she left him and then 5
days later, he decided to leave as well.

The Canada Geese have gone, the Teal have gone, the
Wigeon have gone, the Gadwall have gone and most unusual is a zero
count of Great Crested Grebe. Where have they all gone? Looking at
past records I see that the Grebe counts at this time of year are
very variable, going from record high counts to zero. The water quality
is believed to be poor right now (various dead fish reported) and
I wonder if this is affecting the birds.

I should have done the count today as 40 Little
Egrets reported in the reservoir area by Sue Heselton, smashing
all previous records.

I made a brave attempt to count the Little Egrets
this lunchtime at the expense of duck counting. Max at the res itself
at one time was 31, but there were an extra 6 at least, just north
of the dam at that time. So a minimum of 37 in the area. They are
very mobile between the locations making counting difficult. Walking
the length of the reservoir is plenty of time for them all to have
moved. So that's 31 at the south end, walk to the middle and can only
see 14 at the south end now. walk to the north end and just one there.
How many are north of the dam, crikey 33, so how many are still back
on the res? There's still the lone one at the north end, walk to the
middle and can only see 3 at the south end from there. Back to the
south end and yes confirmed, only 3 of the 31 left there now.
