I suspected that the 20 Pied Wagtails I saw yesterday were just a fraction of the birds present, so I set out to count them today as they entered the reeds. I got to 63 actually in the reeds and some more flying around when a male Sparrowhawk appeared, looking for an easy dinner. The whole lot flew out of the reeds and swirled around after that making any further counting impossible. The male Sparrowhawk was then joined by a female, but the pair soon settled into the trees as the surprise element was gone. |
