I realized this might be yet another record number of Herring Gulls after counting 243 on the shoreline and seeing many multiples of that number spread out over the water. So I decided to photograph the birds on the water in a panorama to count properly later. That count came to 1307 which plus the 243, totals 1,550. Such a count can never be absolutely precise, for instance there were undoubtedly a few juvenile Lesser Black-backs in amongst the Herring Gulls, but equally there were a few Herring Gulls that I am sure I missed on the count. The count of 26 adult Lesser Black-backs made at the time was backed up by the photo.

The local pair of Mute Swans were seen to mate on March 21st and only singles (usually the male) seen since then on the open water. A nest was established in the southwest reeds and one of the pair, mostly the female has been confined to that spot since then, until today.

Presumably the 18 young Mallards are the same 18 as were first seen in April as small chicks and again later in May, part grown.

At least 20 Meadow Browns seen on this hot day, the first I've seen this year. I was getting worried at the lack of them. And a pair of Beautiful Demoiselles were active over the east stream.

Dave Helliar: White-tailed Eagle - Last years bird was tagged from the Isle of White re-introduction scheme as G463. It has been confirmed by the scheme that there was an eagle at Chard today, but with a different satellite tag to the last one. This latest one is G816, but apparently G463 is also 'in the area'. If I'm reading the information correctly, last years bird G463 went on to visit several north european countries after he visited Chard and has now come back to this area.

I made an effort today to catch up on some of the birds that I think are under reported such as Jay and Song Thrush. For instance there was only one record of Jay in each of the last 2 years. So I concentrated on the south east area near the feeders. I covered the southern half of the reservoir to about half way up. The busiest area for birds was near the feeders with Robin, Wren, Dunnock, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit and Long-tailed Tit as well as Jay and Great Spotted Woodpecker higher in the trees. I looked for but didn’t find Marsh Tit, Goldcrest or Treecreeper..
