I joined the butterfly survey team here today and
we found at least 8 eggs on Blackthorn twigs belonging to Brown
Hairstreak butterflies. The eggs are very tiny and we were all made
up to find this evidence especially after a generally very poor
summer this year for butterflies.

The Cormorant with the red ring on its leg was ringed
on Merseyside in June 2022. It was present at Chard at the begining
of this year and into March. Then it went back to Merseyside for the
summer. Making its way south again, it called in at Chew Valley Lake
in August and now has come back to Chard (details from Dave Helliar)..

I counted 22 Mandarins on the water as I arrived and was very pleased
by that count. Then another 20 or so ducks circled over the settled
birds. These appeared to be more Mandarins and may have been, but
as they didn't settle in sight they could have been Teal.

Beetle flew in and landed next to me in the Oaklands
car park. It's about 4cm long. Also a Reed Warbler by the viewing
area on the east side

Blackbirds are regular of course and not usually reported, but
they seemed to be everywhere today. At least 4 singing in the meadow
hedgerows with another 3 males and a female not singing, also in
the meadows. One male with brown wings (maybe a one year old bird?)
collecting worms presumably for a nest.

It is certainly either Goldcrest or Firecrest. Recorded by Sue Heselton.
The volume of the calls peaks at 7.6kHz for the technically minded.
