Chard reservoir sign

2010 sightings

2010 wasn't a match on 2009 for new birds, but there were a few surprises, and some good numbers of scarce birds caused by the very cold weather of December. For a start there were Goosanders seen on a remarkable 60 days and the count of 22 Wigeon was the best for 13 years. In October there was a record count of 11 exotic Mandarin ducks. The cold weather helped to push the Coot count up to 33, the highest for 16 years. The first Chard record of Mediterranean Gull was in 1992 but this year there were sightings on 7 dates over 3 months. Another bird pushed by the cold weather was Skylark. A single bird in October was followed by records on 5 dates in December including 7 together. There were only 2 previous Skylark records in all the years put together. An elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpecker made a welcome return in January after an absence of 6 years. A big surprise was a Wheatear on the shoreline in September, only the 2nd record for the res. A Firecrest stayed for over 2 weeks in January, long enough for even me to find it eventually. Of the breeding birds it was great to hear that no less than 4 nestboxes were occupied by Nuthatches. Lastly, 6 Reed Buntings together in December doesn't sound like many but it was the highest count for 10 years.

  • Great Crested Grebe 1
  • Teal 50+
  • Coot 17+
  • Herring Gull 1 albino

Foggy. The water is thawing, but that is allowing the oil to spread.

The Grebes are back. 9 Days with no Grebes is very unusual here and purely down to the frozen water.

A small pool of water remains in the centre of the res.

This is the highest count of Lapwing since 2002. In some years none are seen at all.
The total Skylark records have been more than doubled by these recent birds. In most years none are seen at all.

There are only 2 official previous records of Skylark though I suspect they were overlooked in the past when the bird was more widespread and common.

December 16th 2010

  • Great Crested Grebe 2
  • Grey Heron 1
  • Teal 15
  • Coot 16

A dead Mallard today adds to the death toll. In previous similar cold weather it has been unusual to find many dead birds, so it seems very likely that the pollution is responsible rather than the cold.

  • Great Crested Grebe 1

The pollution may be getting worse and the Environment Agency were present today looking into it.

  • Grey Wagtail 1

Sue reports a fox being chased by a dog on the shoreline and a Little Egret being eaten by a Buzzard. I missed the action while watching Cranes on the Somerset Levels.

2 Dead Black Headed Gulls have been found in the last few days and it's likely that the Egret died before the Buzzard got to it. Have they been poisoned by the oil pollution?

December 11th 2010

  • Great Crested Grebe 6
  • Shoveler 2

Maybe this oil pollution is partly responsible for the lack of birds?

A lot of these birds, for example all the Egrets, were at the north end and not visible from the hide.
Most of the water at the south end was frozen after overnight temperatures of close to -10C.
The smaller birds like this Nuthatch appreciated the recently filled feeders.

The jays & magpies kept bothering the sparrowhawks so they kept on tusseling around the bushes & tree trunks. It was a joy to watch.

Water pH test - I make this fairly neutral. For some reason on this test strip the 6.5 is more yellow than 6.0 though clearly the more acid readings should be more yellow. So maybe the 6.0 comparison is not quite as yellow as it should be. Also the test is slightly lighter than any of the comparisons. So overall I make this reading less than 7, but only just.

A dull day but the white birds brightened it up. It seems likely that the White Gull is the same one as seen last November. The bill may be wrong for Glaucous, but good for 1st winter Iceland. The eye is pale which would have to mean 2nd winter, not 1st winter Iceland. However the bird is probably just too white for either of these species and albino Herring/Lesser Black Back seems the most likely in fact.

Goldcrest seems to have taken to chasing the Firecrest, 2 times today
whilst watching the Firecrest, a similar bird (assumed it was a
Goldcrest, surely not 2 Firecrests) hurtled in to chase the Firecrest.
Hope it doesnt chase it off completely.
