2011 - A fairly slow start to the year, but
Goosanders were the stars of January and February
right through to the begining of March. Common elsewhere, 3 Gadwall
were nice to see in February. Siskin numbers were
good in early March with 20+ birds. A singing Mistle Thrush
was heard on March 9th and the same day recorded the earliest
ever Sand Martin for Chard. By the end of March
a couple of Swallows had been seen and both Chiffchaff
and Blackcap had been heard singing, On May 31st
there was the first Chard record of Egyptian Goose.
Another first believe it or not was Linnet on August
5th. Presumably no one bothered to record Linnet in the past? The
same day also saw the second record of Crossbill.
5 pairs of Great Crested Grebes are believed to
have bred this year and 4 nestboxes were used by Nuthatches.
It was a good year for Terns with up to 10 Common Terns
together in August, Black Terns were seen on 5 dates and 2 Common Terns and a Sandwich
Tern gave a show on September 2nd/3rd. If rarities are
more your thing, October brought several Mediterranean Gulls
and a Spoonbill. Then December provided
2 very nice male Ring-necked Ducks and another
Mediterranean Gull. And finally a Yellow-Legged
Gull on the last day of the year.

The Long-tailed Tits did appear to be a pair and
not part of a flock which I think is unusual at this time of year.
There were other species of tits around though as well as Goldcrests,
so they were likely associating with these. The wind picked up today
but it was south westerly and quite mild.

First a Hobby was seen over the town catching Martins
and then a Red Kite was seen over the Lordleaze
area flying in the direction of the res at 14:10 (info from R Harris)
